19th century Continental painted pine chest of drawers
circa 1870
Multiple layers of paint have been dry scraped back to the drawers original whites and creams. With it’s tram line details and strap work, no expense was spared when making the piece, also shown by the thickness of pine used. It was built to last and has clearly stood the test of time.
The worn pine plank top gives us a glimpse into how many hands have passed over it
Built using the highest quality pitch pine indicated by its weight
Quite possibly the only cupboard of this type in the country. Found in a barn in Bristol, it had layers of later paints and stains. Carefully and meticulously removing the layers until we reached the original vibrant red. With dashes of orange symbolic to the flame, the darker areas almost symbolising the thick dark smoke. The most incredible part of this cupboard though is the remnants of the word ‘Fire hose’. Likely painted black but lost over time leaving its charred remains…
Mid 20th century painted finish which has developed an attractive crackled finish, with an older yellow paint visible in places
Cupboard consists of large shelved sections offering ample storage. An unusual small access door at the rear
When the latest paint was added, the cupboard was used to store building materials. Large iron latch has been left in place to acknowledge its industrial heritage
Early Victorian front and top. In the mid 20th century, a master craftsman has rebuilt the piece, replacing the sides and interior. It has then been painted to replicate the original finish. It had a later green paint which has been washed back to uncover the old white layers
Incredibly heavy, the doors are almost two inches thick!
Good wear throughout. Bumps and scratches leave it authentic
Four good sized drawers. Original painted finish which has worn to develop a wonderful patina. Previously been waxed to protect the paintwork in its current form
Large two over three style with graduating drawers and original hand turned knobs
Many pieces of Victorian furniture were painted to give the impression of a more exotic and expensive timber. This particular set of drawers was painted in soft earthy tones of yellow, creams and browns in the highly desirable birds eye maple finish
Two over two design. Mid 20th century vibrant blue paint complete with original hand cut glass knobs. Well proportioned set of drawers, sitting well on four hand turned feet
