19th century gilt overmantle mirror
A mid 19th century carved pine and gilt gesso framed over mantel mirror. Arched in shape, with a scrolled surround, surmounted by a shell cresting
Originality is this mirrors strength. The frame has not been overpainted, the gilt has faded and worn. Small sections of the plasterwork have been lost, others look to have been repaired and replaced throughout its lifespan
The original plate is in the early stages of foxing. The first being the streak effect. Verticals translucent areas across the plate have now appeared. Over the coming years, this will develop into patches becoming dull and losing their mirrored quality
