A handsome Arts and Crafts oak bookcase dating from the early 20th century, with a wonderfully simple, purposeful design that places the natural beauty of the timber and quality of construction at its heart.
Tall and relatively narrow in proportion, the bookcase offers generous storage across four open sections while occupying very little floor space. The deep, warm-toned oak has developed an attractive patina, with the grain particularly evident across the substantial side panels.
Typical of the Arts and Crafts movement, decoration is restrained and carefully considered. Fine beaded detailing runs down either side of the open front, while the shaped uprights and gently arched feet give the piece a distinctive silhouette without detracting from its practical character.
